Getting Kicked From Your Own Business

November 21, 20231 min read

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, got kicked out recently, and it's causing a big stir in the tech world. People are comparing it to when Steve Jobs got booted from Apple in the '80s—like major drama levels.

The reason? Conflicting attitudes towards how fast AI should be advancing. The board thinks OpenAI is moving too fast, while Altman feels it's moving too slow.

It's like trying to savour a meal - how fast should we eat in order not to accidentally choke, and eat it while it's hot? Except this time, it's humanity who are the ones taking 'bytes' out of technology.

The clash is also centered around the financial potential of the company interfering with the company's original goals. In just under a year, OpenAI went from a nonprofit to a mega $80 billion company with the success of ChatGPT. Altman's sudden exit surprised even big partners like Microsoft, showing the board made a hasty move.

So... what is there to learn from the whole situation?

  • Tech companies, especially those concerning AI, would probably benefit from taking a moment to reflect on how fast they're growing & how to keep things safe.

  • Changing CEOs is tricky.

  • To avoid being kicked from your own business, it's vital for everyone to be on the same page in regards to the company's values and mission.

What do you think - is AI technology advancing too fast?
